The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, is confident Kotoko will beat ASEC Mimosas on Sunday when the two sides clash in the MTN Otumfuo Cup.
The Kotoko Owner and Life Patron expressed his confidence on Friday when he received the two teams at the Manhyia Palace as part of events heralding the match.
The Porcupines will renew their long-standing rivalry with ASEC Mimosas at the Baba Yara Stadium in a game organised to commemorate the Asantehene’s 20-year reign as King of the Ashanti Kingdom.
The King shook hands with members of both contingents as well as the organisers, Primeval Media, and representatives of the lead sponsors, MTN, and expressed the confidence that Kotoko will emerge victorious after the game.
“Let me commend ASEC, which is a big team in Cote d’Ivoire, for honouring the invitation to play this game in my honour,” said the Asantehene. “Kotoko and ASEC have a long-standing relationship so Sunday’s game is just a renewal of that rivalry."
“ASEC inflicted a painful defeat on Kotoko in a cup final match here in Kumasi some years back, but my team would beat them on Sunday.”
The Asantehene welcomed the side ‘home’ to Ghana and promised them of a memorable stay as he accepted the invitation to grace the occasion.
“I rarely go to the stadium, but have accepted the invitation to grace the day because the game is between ASEC and Kotoko.”
Otumfuo also charged the players of both sides to be disciplined and committed to be successful in their line of work.
“Be discipline once you have chosen football as your profession. Shun alcoholism and nightlife because they won’t help if you want to develop, turn professionals and earn lots of money like some of your colleagues are doing.”
Kotoko were led to the Manhyia Palace by Executive Chairman, Dr. Kwame Kyei, who was also accompanied by Chief Executive Officer, George Amoako and Director of Communications, Samuel Sarfo Duku (Esq).
The ASEC Mimosas delegation presented a customised jersey to the Asantehene.
