Asantehene endorses Dr. Kyei’s Stewardship

Posted on: Fri Nov 17, 2017 - Report by Gideon Boakye Botwe

In what appears as his biggest and most emphatic seal of approval, the Executive Chairman of Asante Kotoko SC, Dr.  Kwame Kyei, received the full blessing and support of club owner and life patron, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II when he led the FA Cup Champions to present the trophy to Nana at the Manhyia Palace.

Addressing all present at the impressive ceremony, the Asantehene gave that clearest indication  yet of his faith in the Kotoko leader who, for the second time in his first year as head of management, was presenting a silverware to him (Nana).

Nana, in his massive vote of confidence, said he has no regrets and no thoughts of relieving Dr.  Kyei of his post. He stressed that having been satisfied with his stewardship so far, he would not heed to ‘gossips and calls for his sack’ by persons who go to him and also speak in the media.

The king’s pronouncements comes as a huge endorsement to Dr. Kyei who, with his own resources, has augmented the team with several top players and instituted arguably, the best player welfare system for a local club and one of the best on the continent.

“Kotoko was sinking and I was looking for someone who could salvage it. I cast my eyes around and they settled on you. I knew you had lots of engagements but I asked nonetheless and you promised that you could,” Nana said.

The King also revealed what shored up his hope in his choice of the Kotoko leader. “When I asked about how you were going to cope financially, you said you didn’t need any money from me and that my blessings were enough and that was an indication of your readiness for the role.”

“It has been a year since I handed Kotoko to you. People come and gossip to me that you are running the club down. People say on radio that you are not good and should be changed. I didn’t give you any money and yet you have never complained to me about any debt and still the team is progressing. I won’t change you for anything. Go and do your work”.

Dr. Kyei, who is also the Executive Chairman of the Unity Group of Companies, was appointed to Kotoko on a three-year mandate. In what was a positive review of Dr. Kyei’s tenure, the Asantehene further gave indications that the soft spoken but firm administrator could earn a rare extension as club chief.

“I feel very relieved because you have not been bothering me with Kotoko issues. You could pay me a visit any time you feel like doing so but now I want you to concentrate on your work”.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II further urged the teeming supporters to unite and remain solid behind the team to rekindle the Kotoko spirit and charged the detractive elements to either offer financial support to the team or shut up.

The Asantehene also asked the players to be more committed to the Kotoko cause if they want to succeed in their chosen career.

“Asanteman and for that matter Kotoko is built on service”, he said. “Here, you serve with all your might and the reward overflows. Don’t allow anyone to influence you to play it soft and lose. It would end you badly if you do that. People come from abroad to scout on you and you could lose a huge opportunity if you do so”.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II also told Coach Steven Polack to ensure discipline and fairness in the team. “Don’t let anyone influence your selection. Don’t use any player who doesn’t train well”.
