Kotoko misses out on final day win

Two second half goals by Liberty Professionals were enough to overturn Kotoko's first half lead; ensuring the Porcupines didn't pick a point at the Carl Reindolf park on final day of the Ghana Premier League.
Kotoko, who took the lead on 36 minutes after Baba Mahama finished off an impressive buildup, failed to replicate their fine form that saw them beat the Dansoman lads last season by two goals at the same venue.
A series of sustained possession in the first half meant that Kotoko were in to take no prisoners against a Liberty team poised to avoid relegation.
Steven Polack's men held their opponents hostage for the first 30 minutes of the game with a dominant play that paid off with a goal to show for when Baba Mahama wriggled his way through a sea of legs before guiding the ball past Anning in post.
The 23 times Ghana league champions, however, failed to hold on to their lead after the interval; ceding influence on the game to the Dansoman boys before Stephen Sarfo connected a cross into Kotoko's area with a grounder for the equalizer on the 68th minute.
Before pulling parity, Liberty had managed to pin the Kumasi based side to their own area in the opening minutes of the second half; winning a penalty after a scrappy tussle in Kotoko's 18 yard box was adjudged as foul by Referee Yaw Ametepe. Bernard Arthur's ensuing kick, however, flew past the bar for Kotoko's temporary relief.
Kotoko made several incursions into Liberty's area in search for the lead. The brightest opportunity came barely a minute after conceding when Tuffour Frimpong was put through on goal but Anning came off his line with an instinctive save to deny the Reds.
With the game's intensity falling a notch lower with both sides sharing fair amounts of possession, it was Liberty who would go ahead to punish Kotoko after Sowah spilled a powerful shot from distance, leaving a lurking Samuel Annan with a simple tap in for the host's second and final goal of the game in the 74th minute.
The very determined Liberty side remained resolute to ward off Kotoko's late threats to keep the game at 2-1 in their favor.
The results leaves the Porcupines on 5th position on the league log with 43 points.
