FA Cup semifinal draw comes off Tuesday

Posted on: Fri Aug 18, 2017 - Report by Bernard Nyankomago Yeboah

Kotoko will know their opponent in the semi-final stage of the MTN FA Cup next Tuesday when the draw is held by the committee managing the competition. The draw is expected to take place at the M-Plaza Hotel in Accra and it’s likely to birth very interesting pairings that will definitely produce exciting matches in the end.

The Porcupines on Wednesday eliminated NEA Salamina in the quarterfinal match that ended 2-1 at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium. Having survived the scare posed by the Division One side, Kotoko are ready for any opponent in the next stage, only that, Coach Steven Polack and his players would have to redouble their effort if they are to make it to the grand finale.

There’s certainty that, the Porcupines would play a Premier League side just like there’s surety that they would have another Premier League team in their semifinal match. Alongside Kotoko in the semis are Medeama, Wa All Stars and Hearts of Oak. While fans would love to see a Kotoko-Hearts final, a semifinal encounter between the two teams would also be thrilling.

Since the re-launch of the FA Cup seven years ago, Kotoko have been to the semifinals four times – 2011, 2013, 2014 and 2015. This will be Kotoko’s 5th semifinal appearance. It’s worth noting that, in all the four previous semifinal appearances – Kotoko reached the grand finale.

On their way to this season’s semifinal, Kotoko beat Bekwai Youth Academy at the Gymafi Park, Bekwai, 3-1 on penalties at the Round of 64 stage. That game ended 1-1 in regulation time.

The Porcupines proceeded to beat Proud United 1-0 at Round of 32 stage in a game played at the Swedru Park. The team returned to Kumasi to beat Wassaman 1-0 in the 1/16th stage before Wednesday’s hard fought 2-1 win over NEA Salamina.
