The players protest a bad decision by Issaka Afful.

Referee Issaka banned for poor performance

For his poor performance in the 2016/17 Premier League, match day ten fixture between Medeama and Kotoko at the T & A Park, Tarkwa, on April 5, 2017; Referee Issaka Afful has been banned by the Ghana Football Association (GFA). The Referee and his Assistant One, Kwesi Brobbey were handed a four-match ban after the Match Review Panel concluded that, their judgments or decisions in that particular match which Kotoko lost 2-1 was below standard.

The ban took effective from match day 16. A letter dated May 30, 2017; signed by the GFA’s Deputy General Secretary, Alex Asante noted with disappointment: “After [a] careful study of the report of the GFA Match Review Committee, the Executive Committee has approved the recommendation stated in the report on the above-mentioned match that; Referee Issaka Afful and his Assistant [One], Kwesi Brobbey are banned for four matches” from match day 16.

As reported by Asantekotokosc.com after the match, Referee Issaka Afful and his ‘able’ Assistant One, Kwesi Brobbey connived to rob and cheat the Porcupines then coached by Coach Zdravko Logarusic. They awarded two dubious penalties to Medeama and unjustifiably sent off Awudu Nafiu besides disallowing a legitimate goal scored by Ahmed Adams.

Referee Issaka also exhibited the highest form of unprofessional conduct when he ignored Michael Akuffu’s call for medical attention for as many as three minutes after the midfielder went down following a challenge on him. The player suffered a “severe chest contusion” for which he needed prompt medical care, which the referee didn’t grant until serious protestation from Kotoko medics – one of whom he shown the red card for reasons best known to him.

Michael Akuffu had to be given emergency medical attention at half time. Kotoko subsequently complained formally about the unfortunate developments in the match. A source close to the corridors of the GFA told Asantekotokosc.com that, after carefully watching the video of the match, the Match Review Committee was appalled by Referee Issaka’s performance. They thus concluded that he served Kotoko a raw deal with his numerous wrong judgements.
