Yakubu powers Kotoko to first victory

Two goals from striker, Yakubu Mohammed in the 56th and 61st minutes respectively gave Kotoko a deserved 2-1 win over Liberty Professionals on Sunday at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium on match day one of the 2016/17 Premier League.

Liberty first shot into the lead after 35 minutes through Benjamin Eshun who capitalised on a defensive error to punish the Porcupine Warriors, who had the going very tough in the first half. Things however changed in the second half as Kotoko attacked more and piled good pressure on the visitors for the equaliser and the match winner.

Emmanuel Gyamfi was too hot to handle by the Liberty defence. He terrorised them for ten continuous minutes – opening their rear a couple of times. On the 56th minute mark, Gyamfi was fouled in the box. The referee wasted no time to award Kotoko a penalty.

Yakubu Mohammed picked his spot right to shoot powerfully into the midsection of the net, sending the expectant supporters into jubilant mood. At 1-1, Kotoko’s firepower was great. They attacked well and created problems for Liberty who reeled under more pressure.

Five minutes after the equalizer, Yakubu Mohammed, would be picked as the Man of the Match, was on target as he neatly connected home a beautiful supply from Kwame Boahene. The win was well fought for and Coach Zdravko Logarusic praised his players and the fans after the game in a post-match conference.
